Huntsville Road Construction

Many people will be out on the roads during this week. Please be mindful of the road construction going on around town so you can plan your route accordingly.

Governors Drive will have planned closings in sections this week to try to prevent major traffic delays:

Tuesday and Wednesday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day: The contractor will close Harvard between Longwood and Governors drives.

Wednesday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.: The contractor will close Princeton Boulevard at Governors.

Wednesday and Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day: Huntsville Utilities Gas Department will close Sivley Road between Governors and Turner Street.

Tuesday, one eastbound lane of Governors will be closed for three blocks, part of the Monroe Street intersection will be closed, and access to and from Vanderbilt Drive will be closed for at least six weeks.

The right, or outside, lane of eastbound Governors will be closed from Monroe to Harvard Road.

Tthe traffic signal at Governors and Monroe will stay green continuously during the closings for motorists going east on Governors.

Motorists going south on Monroe will not be allowed to turn left to go east on Governors, nor allowed to cross Governors to Vanderbilt. The turn lane for southbound Monroe motorists to turn west onto Governors will remain open.Access to and from Vanderbilt Drive and Vanderbilt Circle will be available via Monroe, which veers off the northbound Parkway access road. However, northbound motorists on the Parkway access road will not be able to reach Governors by taking the same route and passing by Vanderbilt Drive.

Brandontown Road between Oakwood Avenue and Jordan Lane is closed to through traffic until about Oct. 3.

The right-hand, northbound lane of Monroe Street between Holmes Avenue and Church Street is closed until early July.

The Jordan Lane/Alabama 53 widening project continues from north of Mastin Lake Road to north of Nick Fitcheard Road.

Madison: Shelton Road will be closed at the railroad track to through traffic from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. to rebuild the road at the crossing. This closure will be in effect until next Friday. Paving work continues on Hughes Road. While Sullivan Street is closed, traffic is diverted to Mill Road, Church Street and Main Street.

Upcoming Construction: Through the middle of June, traffic on the Interstate 65 bridge over the Tennessee River will be reduced to one lane weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for maintenance.

It is estimated that about 115 people die every day in vehicle crashes in the United States, which means about one death every 13 minutes. The financial costs of these crashes are more than 230 billion dollars. Please be careful while you are on the roads. The results of vehicle accidents not only affect you but others around you. The effects can be devastating from loss of your transportation to personal injury or even death for you or someone else. Be cautious of your surroundings and be sure to leave early whenever you can so you do not have to rush. Above all else, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not drink and drive especially during this holiday weekend.
